History of Golghar Patna
If you ever come to Patna, I suggest that you definitely come to see "Golghar". Golghar, located near Patna's Gandhi Maidan and on the banks of the Ganges River, was built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin to store grain.
A severe famine occurred in India in 1770 which greatly affected Bengal and Bihar. More than 10 million people died in this famine.
In view of such a famine, the then Governor-General of India at the time, Warren Hastings ordered the construction of this building.
It was ordered in 1784 by Warren Hastings, the then Governor-General of India, that the granary was "part of a general scheme for the prevention of famine in the provinces of Bengal ( Now West Bengal, Bihar, & Uddisa ). for storing grain for the British Army (not for the Indian people). Now, this building serves as a tourism place.
In 2002, the structure of Golghar was improved by the Bihar government. Presently this historical monument is undergoing renovation.
Golghar is never filled to its maximum capacity and has no plans to do so. Why the government uses it as a tourist place.
Some people have claimed that there is a flaw in its design. The doors of the Golghar open inwards, thus, if it is filled to its maximum capacity, the doors will not open. However, visitors have found that the doors also open to the outside.
