Biosphere Reserves of India, 18 Biosphere Reserves in India
The program of Biosphere Reserves was initiated
under the ‘Man and Biosphere’ (MAS) program by UNESCO in 1970.
The purpose of the formation of the Biosphere Reserves is to
conserve in situ all forms of life, along with its support system, in its
totally, so that it could serve as a referral system for monitoring and
evaluating changes in the natural ecosystem.
The first Biosphere Reserves of the world was
established in 1969.
Presently, there are 18
existing Biosphere Reserves in India.
The government of India has
established 18 biosphere reserves in India.
